THE ARPEGGIO JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Founded by acclaimed bassist and composer Warren Oree, The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble has established a lasting presence in the world of contemporary jazz through its signature sound known as “Undefeated Jazz.” For more than four decades, the ensemble has blended original compositions, jazz standards, world rhythms, and improvisational energy into performances that are both artistically sophisticated and deeply engaging.
The ensemble’s sound moves seamlessly from intimate, reflective melodies to dynamic, rhythm-driven performances. This versatility allows Arpeggio to tailor performances for concert halls, festivals, educational programs, private events, and community celebrations.
The core ensemble features Warren Oree (acoustic bass), Tracy Smith (drums), Doug “Pablow” Edwards (congas and percussion), Frank Butrey (guitar), and Michael Clay (saxophone). Known for its musical versatility and global influences, Arpeggio frequently expands its lineup to include additional instrumentalists, vocalist Sherry Wilson Butler, and distinguished international guest artists.
Over the years, Arpeggio has performed at jazz festivals, concerts, and cultural events throughout Brazil, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean, sharing its distinctive blend of jazz traditions and global influences with international audiences. In addition to performance, the ensemble is deeply committed to arts education and community engagement, presenting workshops and lecture-demonstrations focused on the history of jazz and its pioneering innovators.
The ensemble has released nine recordings, including Man Bites Dog, Lifeline, Slo-Burn, Moving with the Dreaming, Touching Bass, and Le-Le.
For the past 13 years, Warren Oree has also served as curator of the celebrated Friday Night Jazz Series at the Woodmere Art Museum. Warren Oree, the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble and special guest artists take audiences on a unique “narra-musical” journey blending storytelling, historical context, and live performance- from John Coltrane and Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, and Whitney Houston.
While the musicians of Arpeggio are accomplished recording artists, the ensemble’s true spirit is best experienced live, where improvisation, rhythm, and audience connection come together in unforgettable performances. Guided by their enduring motto — “The Drumbeat Is the Heartbeat.”
